Naughton Leads DePaul to Dixon Classic Title

CHICAGO- She would have been proud of the effort put forth by both teams. The place where she learned her craft and the place where she taught that craft, two teams playing for the 2009 title of the tournament that bears her name.

Maggie Dixon played college basketball at the University of San Diego and was an assistant coach at DePaul from 2001-2005. She passed away on April 6, 2006, but her legacy was solidified Saturday night at McGrath Arena.

DePaul's Deirdre Naughton scored a game high 24 points and was named tournament MVP for the second straight year as the Demons defeated USD 84-64 in the title game of the 2009 Maggie Dixon Classic.

"I usually let the players have the [championship] trophy, but this trophy is going to go into the room we dedicated to Maggie in our offices," DePaul head coach Doug Bruno said. "I am proud of [our players] handling the emotion of being able to win our first Maggie Dixon Classic."

DePaul opened up a 39-26 halftime with all players who saw action scoring.

USD's second half full court press helped the Torreros close to 46-41, but a 15-3 run by DePaul, led by Felicia Chester's five points and Jen Juergens' two three-pointers put DePaul ahead 62-44 with 9:35 left to play.

"All five people that were on the court really stepped up against everything [USD] gave us, especially the pressure in the full court," Naughton said.

#17 DePaul (4-0, 0-0 Big East), placed Chester (15 points and 12 rebounds), Keisha Hampton (18 points), and Naughton on the All-Tournament team.

"Before the game [Bruno] put a picture of Maggie right on the board," Naughton said. "It is a really special honor to play this [tournament] for her. I was never coached by her but she has influenced the program so much."

The Torreros were led by Sam Child's 16 points. USD falls to 2-2.

DePaul travels to Evanston to take on Northwestern Tuesday night at 8:00 p.m CST. The game will be televised by BigTenNetwork.com.

Notes: DPU is now 5-0 versus schools from the West Coast Conference...for the second straight game all Demons who played scored.
