Mac Irvin Fire Duo Visit DePaul Blue Madness

On Friday night, highly rated Class of 2011 duo Wayne Blackshear and Mike Shaw from the Mac Irvin Fire AAU program visited the campus of DePaul University for the Blue Demons Blue Madness event to welcome in the college basketball season. In this report, we hear what the two prospects had to say afterwards.

Wayne Blackshear and Mike Shaw have liked playing together on the Mac Irvin Fire AAU team so much the last couple years, that they have expressed a desire to play together as they take their games to the next level.

Blackshear, a 6-4 wing, hails from Morgan Park High School in Chicago's Public league. While Shaw, a 6-8 forward, plays for the DeLaSalle Meteors of the city's Catholic league.

Both were in attendance at DePaul's Blue Madness festivities on Friday night along with Fire coach Mike Irvin.

"The atmosphere was crazy," said Blackshear, who is ranked 12th in the Class of 2011 and third at shooting guard by Scout.com. "The dunk contest was nice."

"Like Wayne said, the atmosphere was crazy," said Shaw, who Scout.com ranks as the 40th best player in the Class of 2011 and the eighth best power forward in the nation. "It was a good experience. We got to see how they have fun."

"It was loud," Shaw said. "We haven't been to that many places."

Blackshear and Shaw have visited Louisville together recently, but also are considering the possibility of playing close to home.

"They are on our list," Blackshear said. "This is our hometown – Chicago. We've got to keep our hometown in it. That means a lot to people, staying home with your family and friends. It's good if we can stay home."

"DePaul is up there," Shaw said. "Staying home is an option. We never know what's going to happen."

The pair are also currently considering Louisville, Kansas, Memphis, Michigan, Purdue, UCLA and USC.

If Blackshear and Shaw were to stay home and play for the Blue Demons, they could lead a resurgence for DePaul similar to when top flight recruits Quentin Richardson and Bobby Simmons chose to stay home a decade ago.

Blackshear and Shaw are familiar with that part of DePaul's history.

"I'm aware," said Mike. "We've heard about all of them. We watched them growing up."

For now, the two are preparing for the coming high school season. Blackshear did talk about what is important to him in a college decision.

"The relationship with the coaches, the players, the system that they play, and the academics," Wayne said. "That's what I look at."
