DePaul Signs Freeland and Stovall

DePaul men’s basketball coach Jerry Wainwright announced the signing of two future Blue Demons on Wednesday.

Mike Stovall Signs National Letter of Intent to Play Basketball at DePaul

CHICAGO – Mike Stovall has signed a National Letter of Intent to play basketball at DePaul it was announced today by Blue Demons head coach Jerry Wainwright.

Stovall is a 6-5, 200-pound forward who is attending Mineral Area Community College in Park Hills, Missouri.

“We are very excited that Mike has decided to join our program. He gives us the big guard we will need to replace Jabari Currie and certainly the experience he brings from junior college will help our current young players. It is also very exciting to us that Mike is a Chicago area product who played in an outstanding program at Marshall High School.”

A native of Chicago, Stovall was a standout at Marshall where he graduated in 2007. As a senior, Stovall led the Commandos in scoring with 20 points per game while also averaging eight rebounds and four assists.

In his final two years as a prep, Stovall led Marshall to consecutive third-place finishes in the Illinois State Tournament. Both times, the Commandos lost to eventual state champion Simeon in the semifinals. Stovall was named to second team all-state in 2007, and among his highlights was a 16-point, 13-rebound performance in a state quarterfinal win over Lincoln. He also scored 16 points in the third-place game against Stevenson.

As a junior at Marshall in 2005-06, Stovall averaged 15 points per game and made the all-city team.

Last season Stovall played at Oregon State where he appeared in seven games averaging 0.9 points, 0.7 rebounds and 0.7 assists.

Tony Freeland Signs National Letter of Intent to Play Basketball DePaul

CHICAGO – Tony Freeland has signed a National Letter of Intent to play basketball at DePaul it was announced today by Blue Demons head coach Jerry Wainwright.

Freeland is a 6-6, 200-pound forward who is a senior at Fremont High School in Los Angeles, Calif.

“We are very excited that Tony Freeland has decided to join the DePaul basketball program. Tony is a combination forward who can make an immediate impact in our program with his athleticism. He is an outstanding young rebounder and with added strength will give us the type of versatile player we need to compete in the BIG EAST Conference.”

Freeland averaged 19.5 points and 11.8 rebounds per game last season as a junior while earning first team All-City honors in Los Angeles. Freeland was named the Coliseum League’s Most Valuable Player after helping Fremont to the conference title. He had 10 games with double figure rebounding totals and set a single-game school record with 24 boards against Los Angeles View Park Prep. Freeland also had a career-high 32 points against Los Angeles Crenshaw. He posted eight double-doubles as a junior.

Ranked as the78th-best forward in the nation by ESPN.com, Freeland was an honorable mention All-American by Street and Smith's.
