Sobie Named to Chicago Sports Hall of Fame

Former DePaul Blue Demon and New York Knick Ron Sobie will be inducted into the Chicagoland Sports Hall of Fame in September.

CHICAGO -- Charles P. Carey, President of Chicagoland Sports Hall of Fame, announced today the 2007 class of inductees. The annual induction ceremony and dinner is scheduled for Thursday, September 13, 2007 at Hawthorne Race Course, 3501 S. Laramie in Stickney, Illinois. Cocktails 6:30 pm and dinner 7:30 pm.

The 2007 Inductees represent retired champions, current coaches and officials from a variety of professional and intercollegiate sports.The list is as follows:

The George Connor Lifetime Achievement Award for invaluable contribution to the game of football will be presented to Ted Hendricks (Oakland Raiders).

Ron Sobie excelled for DePaul from 1953-56. He joined George Mikan as only the second Blue Demon to score more than 300 points in each of his varsity seasons. As captain of the 1956 NCAA Tournament bound DePaul, Ron finished 29th in the country in scoring and 13th in free throw percentage and ninth in rebounding.

After his senior year, Sobie played in the World Series of Basketball, a 21-game tour that saw a team of college All-Stars, under the tutelage of Coach Ray Meyer, battle against the Harlem Globetrotters. Ron was named MVP of the 1956 tour. He would go on to play four seasons in the NBA with the Knicks and Lakers.

The Chicagoland Sports Hall of Fame is an Illinois non-for profit organization with proceeds benefiting Father John Smyth Standing Tall Foundation and other charities.
