Once again the Blue Demons face the Division II Lewis University Flyers in their lone preseason exhibition game. DePaul will use this game to tune-up for the regular season. DePaul coach Oliver Purnell will have the opportunity to see how his five returning veteran players will blend with the seven newcomers that he has added for the2013-14 season.
One of those newcomers is freshman Billy Garrett, Jr. who is expected to start and see time at both the point guard and shooting guard positions.
“I’m excited,” Garrett said of the Lewis game. “This is my first official collegiate game. It’s a new chapter in my life. I’m excited. I’m ready to get everything started finally. It’s been a long time coming.”
This is the fourth straight year where DePaul has played Lewis in an exhibition game in Lincoln Park. The Flyers are coming off a season where they finished 19-9 and 12-6 in the Great Lakes Valley conference.
A couple of trademarks of Lewis head coach Scott Trost’s teams are that they play solid fundamental basketball and shoot well from the perimeter. Trost also manages to recruit players from the Midwest who also had scholarship offers to play at Division I schools.
Two of those are returning juniors Julian Lewis and Ryan Jackson. Lewis, a graduate of Homewood-Flossmoor, averaged 7.5 points and 6.3 rebounds per game for the Flyers last year.
Jackson, from Riverside-Brookfield, has been selected to both the Sporting News and Division II Bulletin Preseason Honorable Mention All-America Men's Basketball Teams. Jackson averaged 16.9 ppg as a sophomore and shot 34.6% from beyond the arc last year. He was named to both the NABC All-Midwest District Second Team and All-Great Lakes Valley Conference First Teams last season.
DePaul will need to guard the perimeter to win this one. Last year, Lewis fought back behind five three pointers from Gabe Williams, all of which came in the second half.
The Last Time
Junior forward Cleveland Melvin led the Blue Demons to a 91-74 exhibition romp past the Division II Lewis Flyers on November 3, 2012.
Melvin picked up a double-double, scoring 25 points on 11 of 18 from the floor and grabbing 11 rebounds.
The Blue Demons jumped out of the gate quickly to a 15 point lead just six and a half minutes into the contest and dominated the Flyers on the boards.
While Melvin scored 25, he shot three of nine from the free throw line.
The Blue Demons had five players finish in double-figures.
Donnavan Kirk also pulled down a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Sophomore Jamee Crockett scored 14 points and dished out a team-high six assists.
Junior guard Brandon Young contributed with 10 points while sophomore Charles McKinney came off the bench to score 10 points.
It was a tale of two halves where the Blue Demons played well defensively in the first half, but then in the second half Lewis started to catch fire.
The Blue Demons had led by as many as 32 points with 16:11 to play in the second half. Then Batavia’s David Bryant and former Farragut guard Gabe Williams came off the bench in the second half to knock down five trifectas apiece for the Flyers.
