Garrett & Morgan Park Grab Sectional Title

Future Blue Demon Billy Garrett, Jr. and the Morgan Park Mustangs took home their first IHSA Class 3A Sectional trophy on Friday night. In this report, we have the story plus a video of Garrett’s postgame comments, and a Garrett highlight video.

DePaul prospect Billy Garrett, Jr. provided Morgan Park with senior leadership as they shut down Perspectives 67-31 to win the St. Laurence sectional on Friday night. Garrett, Jr. scored 12 points, dished out five assists, and grabbed five rebounds in the win for the Mustangs.

“He’s been phenomenal,” said Morgan Park coach Nick Irvin. “I went to Bill at the start of the season and said ‘You can average 40 or we can win and go downstate, you pick it’. He said ‘Nick, I want to go downstate.’ I said that you’re going to have to sacrifice. He’s been doing that all year, he’s been beautiful. It’s going to be hard to replace him.”

The Mustangs secured their first Sectional title in the history of the school. While Morgan Park won a state championship in 1976, the Public League champion advanced directly to the Elite Eight then and did not play in sectionals at that time.

“I told the guys in the locker room ‘Let’s make history tonight’,” said Irvin.

The Mustangs have been getting it done with pressure defense. They held Perspectives to eight points in the first half.

“The main focus from day one is defense,” said irvin. “We want to get out there and pressure people and let our defense spark our offense.”
