Martin named Big East Scholar-Athlete of Year

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – DePaul University guard Anna Martin, a two-time All-BIG EAST selection, has been chosen as the 2012-13 American Eagle Outfitters Women's Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The selection was made by the Conference's Academic Affairs Committee.

A senior from Nicholasville, Ky., Martin will receive a $2,000 scholarship, which may be applied to graduate or professional studies. She is the third DePaul player to earn the conference's top women's basketball academic honor, joining 2007 winner Jenna Rubino and 2008 winner Allie Quigley.

Martin has helped DePaul to a 20-10 regular-season record and a 9-7 mark in BIG EAST play as the Blue Demons earned the No. 7 seed in the BIG EAST Championship presented by American Eagle Outfitters. She appeared in 21 regular-season games, missing nine due to a knee injury, and averaged a team-high 15.7 points per game. Despite being limited to just eight BIG EAST games, Martin was named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team.

Martin was a unanimous All-BIG EAST First Team choice as a junior in 2011-12 as she led the conference and was ranked 25th nationally in scoring at 19.1 points per game. She was an Associated Press honorable mention all-America selection and was a midseason candidate for the Wade Trophy and Naismith Trophy as the top player in the nation. She has helped DePaul to three NCAA Championship appearances.

Additionally, Martin carries a 3.595 grade-point average as a marketing major. She has been named to the BIG EAST All-Academic Team in each of her first three years and was recognized as a Divsion I-AAA Athletic Directors Association Scholar-Athlete in 2012.

Martin's community service efforts include volunteer work with a number of campus and local ventures, including the St. Vincent DePaul Soup Kitchen, the Kentucky Community Centers and Children of the Americas.

The American Eagle Outfitters BIG EAST Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year award is one of a number of scholarships presented by the BIG EAST Conference and American Eagle Outfitters during the 2012-13 academic year. Thirty student-athletes (one male and one female from each of the BIG EAST's 15 member institutions) will be named as the winners of the American Eagle Outfitters BIG EAST Institutional Scholar-Athlete Scholarships. The conference also names male and female American Eagle Outfitters BIG EAST Basketball Scholar-Athletes of the Year and an American Eagle Outfitters BIG EAST Football Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

The winners of the institutional, basketball and football awards are then eligible for the BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, which provides an additional postgraduate scholarship to one male and one female student-athlete.
