Game Preview

Call it the battle to stay out of the Big East cellar.

On Sunday afternoon, the second-to-last place team in the Big East, DePaul (11-17, 2-13), will travel to Tampa to take on the current conference bottom feeder South Florida (10-17, 1-14) in a battle to stay out of the conference basement.

With a combined three Big East wins between the two teams, this will hardly constitute must-see TV.

As one would expect, both teams are coming off recent losses. DePaul was run over by Louisville at home 79-58 on Wednesday night while on the same night USF was picked apart by Pittsburgh on the road 64-44. In USF's loss to Pittsburgh, the team had a 30-28 lead with 16 minutes remaining before the Panthers went on a 16-0 run to take command of the game.

The Bulls are currently on a 10-game losing streak after inexplicably beating Georgetown 61-58 on January 19th.

The Bulls are led by Victor Rudd, who leads the team in both scoring (11.7 ppg) and rebounding (7.1 rpg). The Bulls also get 10 points a game from Toarlyn Fitzpatrick, good for second on the team.

In South Florida's defeat at Pitt, it was Rudd (16 points) and Fitzpatrick (seven points) who led the way once again.

The Bulls also count on sophomore point guard Anthony Collins to lead the way. While light on scoring (8.7 ppg), Collins does add 6.7 assists per game, which ranks second in the Big East. Jawanza Poland is another athletic scorer who comes close to averaging double-digits with 9.1 points per game.

South Florida has a seven-game winning streak in the series with DePaul. Last year, USF won 75-59 at Rosemont. Prior to this seven-game streak, DePaul won the initial four contests as Big East conference foes.

With not that much on the line, the game will come down to a matter of pride and a battle of who wants it more.

The Last Time

On January 22, 2012, the Blue Demons struggled shooting from the outside in a 75-59 defeat to USF at Allstate Arena.

DePaul shot a paltry 16.7% from beyond the arc. Sophomore guard Brandon Young went an uncharacteristic 0-13 from the field.

DePaul freshman Jamee Crockett poured in 17 points off the bench.

USF was particularly strong on the interior. Gus Gilchrist led all scorers with a season-high 22 points. Jawanza Poland was a sparkplug adding 19 points off the bench.

Cleveland Melvin scored 17 points and corralled seven rebounds in the losing effort for the Blue Demons.
