Martin's 35 Leads DePaul Women Over USF
DePaul extended its win streak at McGrath-Phillips Arena to nine games with a win over a Bulls team that took No. 2 Notre Dame to overtime last week before losing 75-71.
The Blue Demons (13-4, 2-1 Big East) were coming off a 65-45 loss at Villanova last week, which snapped their six game streak. The 45 points and six assists versus the Wildcats are season lows for DePaul. Martin scored just six points on 2-9 shooting.
"Sometimes when you do have a bad game, you just want to play so well that you just start forcing things," said Martin. "I kept telling myself to be smart, let the game come to you, and to stay aggressive."
Martin opened the game shooting 7-8 from the floor, and she scored 10 of DePaul's first 14 points. She finished with 20 first half points on 8-12 shooting.
She moves into seventh place all-time in scoring at DePaul (1,656 points), and her two assists ties her for seventh place with Jenni Dant (343 assists).
Martin's jumper ended a 10-0 run by DePaul as the Blue Demons started to gain space with a 27-15 with 9:41 left in the first half.
The Blue Demons led 43-26 at the half, the second largest point total given up by a South Florida opponent this year.
DePaul opened up its largest lead of the game at 66-40 on a jumper by Katherine Harry with 11:52 left in the game.
Harry, too, vindicated herself from the Villanova game with DePaul's only double-double tonight with 13 points and 12 rebounds. She moves into fifth place in rebounding at DePaul with 991 career boards.
"I was not really in the game offensively or defensively at Villanova," said Harry. "That is not okay for a person of my size and what I have been able to do."
Things then got worse for both teams.
Chanise Jenkins went down at 9:53 with a left ankle injury and did not return. Her health status is unknown.
The Bull's frustration then bubbled over at the 9:07 mark when Tahira Johnson shoved DePaul's Brittany Hrynko and was assessed a technical foul.
Hrynko, coming off a 17-point effort against Villanova, sparkled again tonight.
She scored 22 points, including 4-9 from beyond the arc, dished out eight assists and had four steals. She is tied for third in the Big East in three-pointers per game with 2.7 and she is second in the conference with 5.1 assists per game.
But just like the Oral Roberts game, where DePaul had a big lead at the half only to play to a tie in the second half, this game continued to show the Blue Demon's struggles with holding a large lead.
"This has been the same story all year," said Bruno. "We score 85 or 90 points and then we act like it's over."
South Florida outscored DePaul 49-48 in the second half.
The Bulls' (11-4, 0-2 Big East) Andrea Smith scored 15 of her team's final 22 points as South Florida whittled a 23-point deficit to a 16-point deficit over the game's final eight minutes. Smith finished with 35 points.
"We still have to learn how to play with leads, and stay aggressive and not wait for the game to end," said Bruno.
Jasmine Penny added 15 points for DePaul.
DePaul's next game is at Syracuse this Tuesday at 6:00 CST. The game will be carried on the Time Warner television network and on Chicago's Lakeshore Public Television network.
- DePaul has lost guard Megan Rogowski for 4-6 weeks with a broken right (shooting) hand.
- This game was part of Autism Awareness Day, an event sponsored by DePaul's Alpha XI Delta sorority to help raise funds for autism. The sorority also sponsors Puzzlepalooza in April for the same cause.
- Ex-DePaul men's basketball great Bobby Simmons was in attendance.
