Seton Hall Insider
The Blue Demons kick off 2013 with the beginning of Big East conference play on Wednesday night. DePaul hopes to put 2012 and Saturday's loss to Loyola in the rear view mirror and begin the new year with a fresh start against Seton Hall.
DePaul wrapped up Big East play last year with a 86-58 win over Seton Hall at Allstate Arena. They avenged a loss from earlier in the season where they dropped a 94-73 game against the Pirates in Newark, New Jersey.
The Pirates are 11-2 but are coming off a close one, a 60-59 win over Stony Brook.
Former Georgia Tech wing Brian Oliver led the way with 20 points, on six of eight from behind the arc, for the Pirates in that contest. Oliver was named to the weekly Big East Honor Roll following that performance.
One reason for the Pirates struggle is that they've been playing without three of their big men. 6-9 freshmen Kevin Johnson has been sidelined with a knee injury. 6-11 center Aaron Geramipoor is out with a stress fracture and sophomore forward Patrik Auda is done for the season with a foot injury.
The Blue Demons are tasked with taking corrective action following Saturday's loss and righting the ship in time for Big East play.
"We obviously have some work to do in a couple of different areas," said DePaul coach Oliver Purnell. "But at the same time we got to get back to work and get ready for our first Big East game. What better way to redeem yourself than to get back on your home court and win your first league game."
Expect to see DePaul continue to work on addressing their deficiencies to get back to playing their "A" game.
"We clearly have some things to work on," Purnell said. "We got to work on our starts. We to get back to guarding the dribbler the way we were a few games ago. Rebounding is always a work in progress. Execution wasn't great when we needed it to be. We still have some work to do."
The Last Time
The Blue Demons took Seton Hall out behind the woodshed and burst the Pirates NCAA tournament bubble with a 86-58 win at Allstate Arena on March 3rd, 2012.
DePaul recognized seniors Krys Faber and Jeremiah Kelly on Senior Night.
Kelly went out with a double-double of 15 points and 10 assists.
Iit may have been Senior Night, but it was a freshman, Jamee Crockett, who led all scorers with a career-high 21 points off the bench.
The Blue Demons dished out 23 assists and turned the ball over nine times. DePaul capitalized on Seton Hall's miscues by scoring 21 points off of Pirate turnovers.
Cleveland Melvin added 14 points and nine rebounds and Brandon Young chipped in with 10 points and four steals.
