CHICAGO – The Big East Conference announced today the league opponents and sites for the 2012-13 campaign with the Blue Demons facing Connecticut, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh and St. John’s twice next season. DePaul also hosts Cincinnati, Louisville, Rutgers, Seton Hall and Villanova at Allstate Arena.
DePaul meets St. John’s and Notre Dame as repeat opponents for the fourth time each in Big East play. The Red Storm and Irish are DePaul’s most common two-time foes in conference regular season action. A year ago, DePaul faced St. John’s twice and is playing Notre Dame home and away for the first time since the 2007-08 season.
Connecticut is a first-time home-and-away opponent while Pittsburgh and DePaul also met twice during the 2008-09 season. DePaul has not played Syracuse or Georgetown in a Big East two-game series.
Including the repeat opponents, the home conference schedule includes Cincinnati, Connecticut, Louisville, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, St. John's, Seton Hall and Villanova. DePaul travels to Connecticut, Georgetown, Marquette, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, Providence, St. John's, USF and Syracuse.
The conference schedule features 135 regular-season conference games with each team facing 10 opponents once and four opponents twice. All 135 games will again be televised, either by the ESPN family of networks or CBS Sports.
DePaul is scheduled to play in the Cancun Challenge in November with two games at Allstate Arena on Nov. 15 and 17 followed by two games in Cancun, Mexico on Nov. 20 and 21. The Blue Demons are also scheduled to play at Auburn on Nov. 30 as part of the SEC/Big East Challenge.
Head coach Oliver Purnell returns six of his top seven scorers from last season including the BIG EAST's top returning scorer in Cleveland Melvin. Melvin averaged 17.5 points and 7.4 rebounds last season while Brandon Young added 14.5 points and 4.7 assists per game.
