Catching Up with Billy Garrett, Jr.

The AAU season is now in full swing, and for DePaul commit Billy Garrett Jr., it's about winning tournaments and improving as a player. See what Garrett has to say in this latest update.

Billy Garrett Jr. has been committed to DePaul for over a year and already holds the distinction of being a four-star prospect. But that hasn't stopped the 6-4 point guard from Morgan Park High School from continually improving his game during the off season. Now playing with a loaded Mac Irvin Fire team that includes some of the nation's elite, Garrett is focused on becoming a true floor leader.

"It's been great playing with the Fire. We have a lot of great talent, so it's been fun watching us gel and come together and play well as a whole," Garrett said.

So far, the numbers would seem to back Billy's sentiments. The Fire currently sit at 11-3 and through nine Nike EYBL games (stats were not updated at the time the story was published), Garrett had tallied 31 assists to only seven turnovers.

"I'm looking to try and run this team. We have a lot of great talent on this team and me being the point guard, I have to keep us together," Garrett said. "That's the main thing I want to work on; being a point guard. Defensively, I want to pick up the intensity, as well."

While Garrett has focused on running the team on the court, away from the gym, he's started talking with some of his Fire teammates about joining him at DePaul. The Fire have a few DePaul targets on the 17U roster including Jabari Parker, Gavin Schilling, Tommy Hamilton, Jahlil Okafor, Sterling Brown, and Kyle Davis.

"Of course we talk about playing together," Garrett said. "We're all really close friends, so we like to talk about other things, too. We talk about college sometimes and I definitely mention DePaul. I think it would be great for us to stay together in Chicago and I think we'd be able to do great things in college."

Billy is also enthusiastic to have his good friend Cory Dolins join the DePaul program as a preferred walk-on.

"It's nice, Cory is a close friend of mine, and it'll be nice having him on campus and with the team," Garrett said. "He's also close friends with Jabari, so it'll be nice having him around and with the team."
