Malek Harris Picks Up First High Major Offer
Bradley was so impressed with Harris that he and head coach Oliver Purnell called Malek today to offer the class of 2014 forward a scholarship.
"Coach Bradley told me what he was impressed with in my game, then he put me on the phone with Coach Purnell and I got to talk to him to see how he feels about everything," said Harris.
Bradley liked what he saw on both ends of the floor from the young sophomore from Orland Park.
"Coach Bradley was real impressed with the potential that I have in a lot of different places like getting better with dribbling and shooting," said Malek. "He was mostly impressed with my defense. He said that a lot of kids my age think that if you go out and score 20, you don't have to play defense, but I always play defense no matter what."
DePaul has also offered Harris' Wolves teammates Keita Bates-Diop and Amanze Egekeze. Together the three form quite a frontcourt.
"It felt great," Harris said of the scholarship offer. "This was my second offer. I was just offered by Miami of Ohio. It feels great. DePaul is a great school. I know players like Jamee Crockett and I know Billy Garrett, Jr. who committed to DePaul. So, I was really happy. I actually got the news at school. Everybody was like – why are you so happy? I said ‘because I got a scholarship offer from DePaul'."
The versatile 6-7 forward started every single game on varsity as a sophomore at south suburban Sandburg this season, while averaging 10 points and eight rebounds per game for the Eagles.
Harris is looking to improve his game and can next been seen with his Wolves teammates at AAU tournaments over the next two weekends in St. Louis, Missouri and Fort Wayne, Indiana.
"I'm an inside-outside player," said Malek. "I like to be very versatile. I handle the ball and I can play in the post. As Coach Bradley and Purnell know, I can play defense. I can switch onto smaller guards. I'm just trying to work on everything and keep getting better at everything I possibly can, post moves, defense, everything."
