Rick Pitino said on WKRD's Early Birds with Drew Deener Wednesday morning that he has spoken with Peyton Siva and told the junior point guard that he should return to Louisville next season.
"I told him that I would do what I do with all my guys and contact the NBA office," Pitino said. "They have a committee and the committee reports back."
Siva struggled throughout the regular-season with his decision making and outside shooting as Louisville finished seventh in the Big East. The 6'0 Seattle native, though, turned up his play in the post-season, earning MVP honors of the Big East Tournament before helping guide Louisville to a Final Four appearance in New Orleans last week.
"I said it's not in your best interest to even consider it [the NBA]," Pitino said. "I said, 'you've got the speed and ability for the NBA to give you a look some day."
Pitino believes Siva would benefit from spending another season in college gaining consistency with his outside shot while continuing to improve his assist to turnovers.
"He'll be back next season, in my mind he'll come back because it's in his best interest to come back," Pitino predicted.
With Siva in the fold, several college basketball analysts and publications are picking the Cardinals as one of the top preseason teams for 2012-13. ESPN's Andy Katz ranks Louisville #2 behind Indiana, while CBS ranks the Cardinals in the Top 5. Dick Vitale ranked Louisville #1 overall.
"He's been very good at picking [the best teams]," Pitino said. "I hope he's right."
