2012 Guard Favors DePaul

DePaul coach Oliver Purnell is going out west to get some help for the Blue Demons backcourt. Durrell McDonald, a combo guard from Henderson, Nevada, plans to visit Chicago soon. Learn more about this 2012 guard prospect in this report.

Durrell McDonald, a 6-2 combo guard from Green Valley High, plans to take an official visit to the Windy City this weekend.

"I'm just really excited and trying to stay humble," McDonald said.

While in Chicago, McDonald will visit DePaul's campuses and watch the Blue Demons play South Florida on Sunday.

It's safe to say that DePaul is the favorite for McDonald's services.

"DePaul just really fits my style," McDonald said. "Other schools, I've seen them play and they're good programs and all, but it's just the way that I've come up playing basketball and the way that my team plays now, DePaul just really fits everything that I do."

What appeals to Durrell is Purnell's pressure defense and pressure offense.

"I like their style of play," said McDonald. "Their style of play is really high intense. They full court press, which I love. They are always uptempo."

With a father who played professionally in Australia, McDonald has travelled quite a bit in his young life and likes the thought of living in Chicago.

"Then there is the Chicago area," said Durrell. "The Chicago area is such a beautiful area."

McDonald is an under the radar guard who is having a solid senior year at Green Valley.

In early December, Durrell dropped a game high 34 points on Las Vegas High.

More recently, McDonald finished with 29 points and 10 rebounds in a 58-55 victory over visiting Coronado for the Gators.

McDonald is a dazzling ballhandler who is capable of playing either guard spot on the floor.

"I see myself as more of a combo guard," said Durrell. "When people need a point guard and need somebody to get them into motion, I feel like I can really do that. Whatever coach needs from me, if they need points, I can get buckets here and there, rebound, and hustle plays too. Whatever coach asks me, I'll be able to do it."

McDonald is often compared to his father, Darryl McDonald. The elder McDonald grew up in Harlem, NY and played at Texas A&M. He then went on to play professionally in Australia up until the age of 44.

DePaul is looking to hit the jackpot in Las Vegas with McDonald, given their previous success with Blue Demon sophomore Moses Morgan, who hails from Palo Verde High School in Nevada.

"I don't know Moses personally, but I do know of him," said McDonald. "His cousin goes to my school."

If McDonald decides on committing to the Blue Demons for the spring signing period, he'll join Gary, Indiana forward DeJuan Marrero and Detroit, Michigan sharpshooter Jodan Price in the class of 2012 for DePaul.
