Garrett Lights Up Peach Jam
The son of DePaul assistant coach Billy Garrett, is a four-star prospect who is currently ranked 75th in the class of 2013 by Scout.com and is considered the 16th best point guard in the class.
Garrett, who verbally committed to DePaul in April, proved to be a playmaker while at Nike EYBL Peach Jam in North Augusta, South Carolina this week. He's progressed from being a role player with the 17U Mac Irvin Fire team in the spring to being a team leader in the summer.
Despite playing with a junior 5-star prospect in Jabari Parker and 4-star senior forward Steve Taylor, Garrett led the Fire in scoring in four of their six games while at Peach Jam.
Over the six games, Billy averaged 17.3 points per game on 50% from the floor and 90.4% from the free throw line. Even more impressive was his shooting from behind the arc. Garrett had one game where he was six of 11 on threes, he shot 48.7% overall on trifectas for the tournament.
"He just knows how to score and get into the lane in order to create," said Scout.com analyst Brian Snow. "Garrett was key for Mac Irvin getting going, and when things got close he always managed to making a winning play to help his team."
The Fire lost in the tournament quarterfinals to the Georgia Stars. While Garrett was pleased with his play, he would liked to have taken home a trophy.
"I think as a team we played alright, we could have played better," said Billy. "I played pretty well, I was making shots. Overall, I was satisfied with the way we played. I wish we could have won it."
Billy just seems to keep getting better in every aspect of his game. How does he do it?
"Time in the gym and overall confidence level," Garrett said. "I've been working out and just try to get better. I try to build on each game I play and just try to play better than I did the last game. Just making shots, that's what it comes down to."
Garrett and the Mac Irvin Fire have a few days off before they head to Las Vegas for yet another AAU tournament later this week.
