DePaul's Melvin Named Big East Rookie of Year

The Big East conference awarded DePaul freshman forward Cleveland Melvin with the league's Rookie of the Year award today.

The league's 16 coaches selected Cleveland Melvin as the best newcomer following a season in which he led all freshmen in scoring. He received the conference's Rookie of the Week award four times this season.

Melvin was the only unanimous selection for the Big East All-Rookie Team.

Cleveland is only the second DePaul freshman to earn conference Freshman of the Year honors since Quentin Richardson did so in Conference USA back in 1999.

The Baltimore, Maryland native averaged 14.3 points, 5.0 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game this season.

In conference action, Melvin ranked among the league's leaders (sixth in the league) with 17.4 points per game and was fifth in field goal percentage (52.2%). He missed the final three Big East games with a sprained thumb on his left hand.
