Donnavan Kirk Talks About DePaul Decision

On Monday former Miami forward Donnavan Kirk will be attending classes at DePaul University and will be practicing with the men's basketball team. Learn what the newest member of the Blue Demons has to say about his decision in this report.

Donnavan Kirk, a 6-9, 230 lb. power forward, averaged 2.7 points and 1.6 rebounds in 9.5 minutes per game in 13 appearances for the Miami Hurricanes this season. On Thursday evening he let DePaul coach Oliver Purnell know that he wanted to be a Blue Demon.

"I sat down with the coaches, they're very detailed and everything," said Kirk. "They let me know what direction they are headed in and what type of class they have coming in. I can definitely see us being really, really good there. Not to mention it's also a good school, right there in the city of Chicago where a lot of business is done. I just thought it was a good place for me to be."

Kirk chose DePaul over Central Michigan, Michigan, Northwestern, and Oakland. He visited DePaul's Lincoln Park campus earlier this week.

"I thought it was nice," said Donnavan. "Everything is right there, it's not too huge."

Coming from South Beach to Chicago in January, there is one bit of adjusting that Kirk will have to do.

"It's a little cold out there," he said. "I prefer the warm weather."

Donnavan knows current DePaul strength coach Mac Calloway, who worked in the same role at Miami last season. The two worked closely together during Kirk's medical redshirt season last year.

"Mac is a great trainer," said Kirk. "I love working with him. He said that he has to finish up the project. He was doing something good in Miami. I was in a situation where I wanted to get back closer to home and he was there telling me that (DePaul) was a good school to look at. He definitely influenced me a lot to be there. I talked to Coach (Ron) Bradley, Coach (Brian) Ellerbe and Coach Purnell, they all influenced me too."

Kirk could be eligible to play for DePaul as early as late November when the Blue Demons will be competing in the Old Spice Classic tournament in Orlando, Florida. He will give Purnell another weapon in the frontcourt next season.

"I'm a rebounder, a defender, my offensive game is inside-out," Kirk said. "I can go to the post and I can also face the basket. I can play from the wing. I've got a right hand hook shot. I can get up and down the court. That's why I like playing for Coach Purnell. He'll make people get up and down the court."

For now, the Detroit area native is packing his bags and getting ready to move into his new DePaul dorm room over the weekend.

"I know I'll be in class on Monday," said Kirk. "I'll probably practice with the team on Monday too."
